I have decided that every Thursday I am going to do a blog post on a film I really love...and not major pop culture flicks. I am going to try and pick more obscure ones that I feel everyone should watch. I have gotten so many lovely comments on the weekly Tuesday Tunes post, so I thought I could do the same for you all with movies! Ladies and gents its time for......drum roll please....CINAMATIC FANTASTIC! For my first one I have chosen The Royal Tenebaums. I still can't believe how many people have never seen this movie! Yes yes I am sure some of you will argue that it is a major motion picture, and it is. But it isn't mass produced bubblegum crap. It is moving art, so tragically sad that it is beautiful. Its also downright quirky and wonderful!
I'll be honest. The first time I watched it I turned it off. It was too sad, some of the issues cut to close to home for me. But when I was in a happier place I watched it again, and again, and again, and again. Everything about this flick is artistic, tragic and honest.

Simply put its a story about a family, a real one. A family that is messed up and imperfect and really kind of whacked....but they love each other.

Something about this movie speaks to me on a very deep level. The three siblings Chas, Margot and Richie are all completely messed up in their own ways. They are each a little bit self absorbed, lost in their own worlds and they miss a lot of what is happening around them. As do their parents.
Picture
I think that is part of what I love this movie so much. Each character has their own way of expressing a narcissistic almost "emo" side that I think everyone can relate to. There is a bit of that in us all. We all have our skeletons hiding in the closest don't we? And sometimes it feels good to brood over them. Cathartic.

But there comes a time when we have to snap out of it, wake up and see the world around us. And I won't lie and paint fluffy clouds...it can be messed up and tragic and sad but it can also be very beautiful. It is fragile and there is an intense beauty to fragility. And when you can share that beauty with your family, the world is a wonderful place.

Fall is a wonderful time to curl up with someone you love, two legged or four ;) and watch a good movie. Why not give this one a whirl and tell me what you thought? The soundtrack by the way is great!! I <3 Nico!

oh i love love love love this movie so much. I really love Wes Anderson. His movies are always full of funny and tragic characters. Though some of the scenarios are totally silly, there's still a realness to them that everyone can relate to. great choice, can't wait to see what you pick next week!
